“In Memoriam...”

Scottsdale, AZ – Leslie Nielsen, master of deadpan comic delivery died Sunday in Fort Lauderdale due to complications from pneumonia. He was 84. Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, Nielsen’s career ranged from television’s “Golden Age” garnering the monumental salary amounts of $75-$100 per performance, to film. Starring in such iconic films as the 1956 science fiction forerunner “Forbidden Planet” alongside co-stars Anne Francis and Robby the Robot, to later disaster epics like 1972’s “The Poseidon Adventure”. Nielsen even played the handsome leading man opposite Debbie Reynolds in “Tammy and the Bachelor” in 1957. While Nielsen continued to excel at television and film dramatic roles throughout the 60s and 70s, it was his film comic roles throughout the 80s, 90s and beyond that were the most memorable.

“Airplane”, the “Naked Gun” series, the hilarious parody of “The Exorcist” entitled “Repossessed”, the slasher parody “Scary Movie” all left audiences rolling in the aisles. Despite being legally deaf (he wore hearing aids) for much of his life, Nielsen rose to prominence speaking some of the funniest lines ever written with deadpan delivery. Yet, throughout his life and career it seems that Nielsen never took himself too seriously.

It is with great regret that we say goodbye to Leslie Nielsen, yet we are simultaneously grateful for his body of work and the laughter he gave us. He will be missed...

“I Believe In Myself...”

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Prepared by James Cowden

“I Believe In Myself...”

Scottsdale, AZ – If you want to be a model, or an actor, or any part of the entertainment industry, you have to believe in yourself. The belief that you can surmount all obstacles. The entertainment industry can be full of great rewards but often, to achieve those rewards one must endure great hardships. You have to have a thick skin.

Let’s accept the fact that the concept of “an overnight sensation” is rare. There no longer is a studio system or great impresarios such as De Mille that discover a star at the counter of a drugstore soda fountain. Competition is tough. You may be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, ride a horse fall 50 feet onto an airbag, dance like Michael Jackson, or have a face like Angelina Jole. You may be all these things and more but without a sense of self-worth and confidence, it’s all for nothing.

Believing in yourself is not only important, it’s essential. Believing in yourself is not just about “I am so wonderful I could hardly be better”. It’s about self-respect. That begins with taking care of yourself both physically and mentally. Keep yourself healthy. Develop healthy habits. Exercise, get plenty of rest and follow the adage that “my body is a temple, I shall worship it”.

Being an actor or model is a strenuous business. One must endure long hours, low pay, and numerous opinions both qualified and not so qualified regarding your talent and capabilities. You have to have a selective sense of hearing. Weed out the valid commentary and forget the rest.

The Matrix (1999)
Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.

And when all is said... “it is only yourself.”

“Your Actions Can Effect Your Career.”

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Tuesday, November 23, 2010
Prepared by James Cowden

“Your Actions Can Effect Your Career.”

Scottsdale, AZ – You only need to look at the current difficulties of Lindsay Lohan to arrive at the understanding that you can easily damage your reputation. Case in point? The upcoming film “Inferno” depicting the life of Linda Lovelace (Linda Boreman) who died in in 2002 as a result of injuries sustained from an auto accident. Lohan’s personal exploits off the set forced the director, producers, and backers ( and it is always about money) to drop her from the film and replace her with Malin Ackerman.

The bottom line is no matter who you are or what your previous accolades have been, no one is indispensable. In addition, with the instant response of the web, social media, and smart phones with photo and video capabilities anything and everything you do is “open season.” So, it’s important to consider how your actions and behavior can affect your career. We’ve all seen the effects of being “Youtube’d” and how a simple thoughtless, and often embarrassing act can go viral overnight.

If you are seriously interested in a career that is public, do your best to keep your private life “private”. We live in an age of Big Brother. There are eyes everywhere and the walls have ears... The best protection for your reputation is not to be frivolous with it in the first place.

“I have one word for you... Professionalism.”

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Prepared by James Cowden

“I have one word for you... Professionalism.”

Scottsdale, AZ – Nothing broadcasts to the world that you're worth the money you're being paid than a sense of professionalism. First impressions are the lasting impressions and unfortunately far too many people squander those first impressions by showing a lack of professionalism. One of the obvious aspects of professionalism is just showing up on time. In a business where time is a premium, showing up on time is just good business. You must remember that you are your product.

Punctuality, knowing your lines, and presenting yourself as someone who knows what they're doing is just basic to the business of acting or modeling and could make the difference in getting your next job. Developing a reputation of professionalism is essential in furthering your career. Here are some points you should consider:

Arrived early to prepare yourself for any contingency.
Know where you’re going in advance. Make sure you have accurate directions.
Look the part... And that goes for both actors and models. Being appropriately dressed for example sends a signal that you take your job seriously.
Know your lines, if any. Whether it’s a trade show, commercial, or stage play, it is imperative to be familiar with your part.
Have all your necessary tools with you. Makeup, clothes, shoes, get as much information prior to the shoot as you can and be prepared.
Remember to smile... It seems insignificant, but it makes a difference.
Relax... Try not to fidget or be too nervous. Present an image of being cool and calm under pressure. It’s one of the things that separates the professional from the wannabe...

“So…You Want To Be A Model.”

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Friday, November 12, 2010
Prepared by James Cowden

“So…You Want To Be A Model.”

Scottsdale, AZ – When many people think of the modeling industry they think of glamour, expensive clothing, exotic locales, and of course high pay. However the reality sometimes does not match the perception. True, the profession can be glamorous, exciting, and even financially rewarding for a few but more often than not, an average photo shoot consists of demanding schedules coupled with long periods of boredom, punctuated with extreme stress and even terror depending on the location and weather conditions of shoot.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the employment outlook for models is expected to grow by 16% between 2008 and 2018, yet competition is expected to be "keen". Understanding this level of competition, anyone with the desire to become a model should understand one important thing. You are your product. A successful model's career depends on a number of things not least of which is their own physical makeup. Diet, exercise, and even sufficient sleep are important considerations for any aspiring model.

Another important consideration is that of a good agent. Even the Bureau of Labor Statistics in a recent publication states that agencies “advise models on how to dress, wear makeup, and conduct themselves properly doing those CDs and bookings. Because models advancement depends on their previous work, development of a good portfolio is key to getting assignments. The higher the quality of the photos in the portfolio and more current they are, the more likely it is that the model will find work.”

An aspiring model should think to keep his or her options open. The modeling profession is not limited to the runway. And, not all models need to be 6 foot and sized 2. Models may also consider plus sized, body part modeling such as hands, feet, nails, and even artist modeling. All of which can be very lucrative. The bottom line is... on be creative, be diligent, and be professional. The limitations are only those you place on yourself.

“Reality check...”

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Thursday, November 11, 2010
Prepared by James Cowden

“Reality check...”

Scottsdale, AZ – There is an old joke that goes around the entertainment industry... A young man arrives in New York for the first time and wants to see the sights. He stops and older well-dressed gentleman and asks: “Excuse me sir, how do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The gentleman looks at him, and with deadpan delivery says: “Practice young man... Practice.”

Sure it’s an old joke, but the underlying sentiment rings true. If you have a profound desire to be either a model, actor, or entertainment professional there are certain personal requirements you must keep in mind. As with any profession, one requires ability and the proper tools. For some, ability comes naturally. For others, it requires considerable effort to arrive at the same level. You must remember that YOU are your product and just as you would paint your home or wash your car in an effort to attract buyers and create an “image” of greater value, so must you enhance your image.

First and foremost, always exhibit a high level of professionalism. This may range from just arriving on time and being prepared with professionally photographed head shots or portfolios. And by professional, we are not talking about uncle Bob who fancies himself a photographer and loves to take pictures with his new digital camera. No, we are talking about an industry professional, with industry experience in what print art directors and casting directors are looking for. Perhaps you are not blessed with the striking beauty of a supermodel, but have you ever seen the supermodel badly photographed without makeup?

Quality is the key and sometimes quality can be expensive. Simple acting headshots can range around $500. For modeling portfolios it can be considerably greater. Depending on the number of shots, fashion changes, stylist, and location, costs can run into the four figure range or more.

For actors, let’s assume that you are auditioning for a commercial yet you have no acting experience or time in front of the camera. What do you do? Take classes and get that experience. Some of the finest actors to grace film and stage were products of “The Actor’s Studio” in New York where they stretched their abilities and learned new techniques to enhance their skills.

Modeling and acting are professions just as is any other and require certain tools in place. Desire and innate talent is not enough. Just as a craftsman is often only as good as the quality of tools that he or she possesses, so must you have desire, talent, acquired skills and proper tools in place to advance your career.

“Top Reasons to Choose A Licensed Agency.”

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Tuesday, November 2, 2010
Prepared by James Cowden

“Top Reasons to Choose A Licensed Agency.”

Scottsdale, AZ – According to Arizona law, talent agencies are licensed and regulated by the State Department of Labor. In addition: The department thoroughly “investigates the background of each firm applying for a license.” It should also be noted that operating without a license is a class 6 felony. So you see, becoming a licensed talent agent is no easy feat.
Licensed agents work from commission, not from signing fees. Arizona statutes mandate that licensed agents are the only people who can procure work for talent within the industry. A licensed agency such as Empire Talent & Models works hard to build relationships with clients such as advertising agencies, casting directors and producers. A reputable licensed agent will counsel and direct an artist in the development of their careers.
Empire Talent & Models strives to build lasting relationships with both clients and talent while cultivating a reputation for fair dealing. Remember, a reputable licensed agent always keeps the success of their talent in the forefront. Marisa Sclafani, owner of Empire Talent & Models has more than 22 successful years of talent representation experience.
