“Reality check...”
Scottsdale, AZ – There is an old joke that goes around the entertainment industry... A young man arrives in New York for the first time and wants to see the sights. He stops and older well-dressed gentleman and asks: “Excuse me sir, how do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The gentleman looks at him, and with deadpan delivery says: “Practice young man... Practice.”
Sure it’s an old joke, but the underlying sentiment rings true. If you have a profound desire to be either a model, actor, or entertainment professional there are certain personal requirements you must keep in mind. As with any profession, one requires ability and the proper tools. For some, ability comes naturally. For others, it requires considerable effort to arrive at the same level. You must remember that YOU are your product and just as you would paint your home or wash your car in an effort to attract buyers and create an “image” of greater value, so must you enhance your image.
First and foremost, always exhibit a high level of professionalism. This may range from just arriving on time and being prepared with professionally photographed head shots or portfolios. And by professional, we are not talking about uncle Bob who fancies himself a photographer and loves to take pictures with his new digital camera. No, we are talking about an industry professional, with industry experience in what print art directors and casting directors are looking for. Perhaps you are not blessed with the striking beauty of a supermodel, but have you ever seen the supermodel badly photographed without makeup?
Quality is the key and sometimes quality can be expensive. Simple acting headshots can range around $500. For modeling portfolios it can be considerably greater. Depending on the number of shots, fashion changes, stylist, and location, costs can run into the four figure range or more.
For actors, let’s assume that you are auditioning for a commercial yet you have no acting experience or time in front of the camera. What do you do? Take classes and get that experience. Some of the finest actors to grace film and stage were products of “The Actor’s Studio” in New York where they stretched their abilities and learned new techniques to enhance their skills.
Modeling and acting are professions just as is any other and require certain tools in place. Desire and innate talent is not enough. Just as a craftsman is often only as good as the quality of tools that he or she possesses, so must you have desire, talent, acquired skills and proper tools in place to advance your career.
