“So…You Want To Be A Model.”
Scottsdale, AZ – When many people think of the modeling industry they think of glamour, expensive clothing, exotic locales, and of course high pay. However the reality sometimes does not match the perception. True, the profession can be glamorous, exciting, and even financially rewarding for a few but more often than not, an average photo shoot consists of demanding schedules coupled with long periods of boredom, punctuated with extreme stress and even terror depending on the location and weather conditions of shoot.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the employment outlook for models is expected to grow by 16% between 2008 and 2018, yet competition is expected to be "keen". Understanding this level of competition, anyone with the desire to become a model should understand one important thing. You are your product. A successful model's career depends on a number of things not least of which is their own physical makeup. Diet, exercise, and even sufficient sleep are important considerations for any aspiring model.
Another important consideration is that of a good agent. Even the Bureau of Labor Statistics in a recent publication states that agencies “advise models on how to dress, wear makeup, and conduct themselves properly doing those CDs and bookings. Because models advancement depends on their previous work, development of a good portfolio is key to getting assignments. The higher the quality of the photos in the portfolio and more current they are, the more likely it is that the model will find work.”
An aspiring model should think to keep his or her options open. The modeling profession is not limited to the runway. And, not all models need to be 6 foot and sized 2. Models may also consider plus sized, body part modeling such as hands, feet, nails, and even artist modeling. All of which can be very lucrative. The bottom line is... on be creative, be diligent, and be professional. The limitations are only those you place on yourself.
